If you’re thinking of re-inventing yourself for 2016 then you MUST read How To Be Parisian Wherever You Are by Caroline de Maigret. The contents of this marvelous read are the teachings of Ms. Maigret on style, beauty, culture, love and bad habits. What better way to learn about the Parisian ways than by the Queen of Paris herself! Along with friends Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan and Sophie Mas, Caroline de Maigret has revealed her deepest, darkest secrets and top tips on how to be sexy and sassy, all day, every day.
The former model, and ambassador for Chanel, (yes she’s an ambassador for Chanel, and that’s why we should listen to everything she has to say) is witty and sharp and tells us like it is. And so it begins…
“The truth is out: Parisiennes aren’t privy to a secret “skinny” gene, they aren’t always easy to be with and aren’t all perfect mothers. In fact, they are very imperfect, vague, unreliable and full of paradoxes. But they can also be funny, attentive, curious and ironic, and they know how to enjoy life.”
The book doesn’t have a story and it doesn’t run in a chronological order which you are made aware of from the very beginning with a lovely quote from Jean-Luc Godard ‘a story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end, but not necessarily in the order’. It’s hilarious and you’ll find yourself giggling on the bus on your way home from work (seriously, pretty much every evening). There’s one off random pages that tell you ‘How To Make Him Think You Have A Lover’ and ‘The Ideal Man’, in which are pure genius. Now, the girls are not telling you who you should or shouldn’t fall in love with, or that you should mind fuck your man, but let’s be honest, it’s only fun and games and we need to learn how to enjoy life.
Not only are we taught how to breeze through life being trés chic and effortlessly cool but the girls tell us how to throw the perfect Parisian dinner party, just like Coco Chanel! Of course, it’s champagne to start, but the girls also give us an insight to some of their favourite recipes too! If cooking isn’t your thing, then you’re not to worry as the girls give us a go-to-guide on where to eat in Paris depending on your occasion (not that we need an occasion to go out to eat) because ‘you wouldn’t take your great-aunt for lunch to the same place you take your lover’.
With beautiful illustrations and aesthetically pleasing photography the book is almost angel-like, (if books could be described as an angel) I supposed the best way to describe it would be that it is like a Bible. For sure it is my new Bible and I’m passing its teachings on to you. Take it everywhere with you, if needs be. Never let it out your sight. Read it, and read it again. Learn from these Parisian babes.
Mas, Diwan, Berest and de Maigret, you’re all my kind of woman, you’re my modern day muses, goddesses of the fashion world, and lecturers of life and I salute you!
