A craze over adult colouring books has taken the world by storm, but why? Well, Mark Waldman, one of the world’s leading experts on communication, spirituality, and the brain tells us. “By simply spending a few minutes several times a day, on something such as this, a person can permanently alter the functioning of the brain by as much as 25%. Thus resulting in greater work productivity, less stress, decreased anxiety and depression, and enhanced memory”. Well, I’ll be damned…

So, not only are we removing ourselves from a stressful environment, but unknowingly improving our mental state. Concentrating intently on the colouring book keeps our mind from drifting on to other subjects that can be causing stress, such as work. It’s also known as creative meditation, causing our brain to focus on the present, blocking out any other thoughts.

Not only is this meditative activity great for our mind and soul, but it’s also a great hobby, and is a perfect opportunity to get a little bit of time to yourself. There are hundreds of these stress releasing, anxiety fighting colouring books in different patterns and pictures. The Mindfulness Colouring Book is one of the best sellers (£7.99, Waterstones) with the subtitle ‘anti-stress art therapy for busy people’, the synopsis:

‘Working with your hands is one of the best ways to soothe anxiety and eliminate stress. This stunning, pocket-sized colouring book offers a practical exercise in mindfulness that draws on your creativity and hones your focus. Beautifully illustrated, it’s filled with templates for exquisite scenes and intricate, sophisticated patterns, prompting you to meditate on your artwork as you mindfully and creatively fill these pages with colour. Take a few minutes out of your day, wherever you are, and colour your way to peace and calm’.

From beautiful secret gardens to vintage wallpaper patterns, there are designs for everyone to love and enjoy. Personally, I love them, they’re therapeutic and calming, and super satisfying when you’ve finished a true masterpiece. In our busy lives, we don’t take time to sit down and focus on something other than the stresses of adult life. However, sales have been through the roof when it comes to these colouring books, meaning a lot more adults are taking time to rewind and find their inner peace.

Try it yourself for calmer, more tranquil living.
